About Root Coaching
Root Coaching was founded by Josh Causey, a counselor by training who spends his working life helping people figure out what to actually do next.
Why this exists
The good coaching was always upstairs.
Give a capable person regular time with someone whose only job is to think alongside them, and they move. Josh watched it happen for years, working next to executives and the people who support them. There is nothing mystical about it. Someone who knows the frameworks asks the question they have been avoiding, and then stays long enough that avoiding it stops being an option.
That kind of attention is expensive, and it gets handed out by rank. Executives get a coach. Athletes get a coach. Everyone else gets a book recommendation.
The people outside those rooms were not in crisis and were not failing. They were competent adults who had quietly stopped moving. Nothing was wrong enough to fix, which is exactly the trap. Coasting never announces itself.
Root exists so that coaching stops being something you have to be important to receive. It is built for people who work, raise families, show up for their communities, and have never once considered that a coach might be for them.

Coaching is an unregulated field. Anyone can print a certificate. So here is what is actually behind the work.

Master of Arts, Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Graduate training in how people actually change, and in how to sit with someone through the part where it is uncomfortable.

National Certified Counselor
A national certification held through the NBCC. Root is a coaching practice, not a clinical one, and Josh does not provide therapy here.

Board Certified Coach, in progress
The BCC credential is awarded through the Center for Credentialing & Education. The training behind it is complete and the certification exam is the last step. This page drops the qualifier the day it is done.

Coaching happens by video, so where you live is not a constraint. Where Josh lives is a small town outside Atlanta.
On therapy. Josh's training is the reason Root draws such a hard line between coaching and therapy rather than blurring it. Therapy heals what hurts, and it is excellent at that. Coaching assumes you are healthy and works forward from there. If it becomes clear that therapy is what you actually need, we will say so and help you find it. That promise is not a formality. It is the whole reason the training matters.
The name and the model
Named after a board game. Built to run as a nonprofit.
Root is a board game where every player sits at the same table and plays by a different set of rules. One wins by fighting, another by building quietly in the corner, another by simply outlasting everyone. Same board, different win conditions. Watch people try to play it like a normal game, all racing toward the same square, and you will see the mistake most of us make with our own lives.
The nonprofit part is not decoration either. Nobody here profits from keeping you in coaching. That single fact changes the incentives all the way down: sessions are priced for regular life, engagements are short-term by design, and the only number worth watching is whether you moved.
It also means the honest answer is sometimes "you do not need this." A practice that lives on retention cannot afford to say that out loud. Root can.
